I would say with complete certainty that on more than one occasion my approach to life has been centered around the “search”… this need to discover some truth or purpose that is out there, waiting, just for me. Sounds a little self–centered does it not? I think as humans we are hard-wired to see the world as insiders looking out. Things happen “around” us, and although we stand fixed at the center, we often forget that we can take the reigns and spur change – for ourselves. Well let’s be honest, while that is liberating, sometimes it feels like a lot of pressure.
So perhaps a shift in perspective is in order? If we can abandon the search (just for now, I know it’s uncharted territory) and instead pick up the proverbial paintbrush – how refreshing to face a blank canvas wherein we are the creators. And the best part – if there’s a stroke you don’t like, paint over it! Why not take the opportunity to lay each brick and build a life that is yours and no one else’s? Be the maker of your own mind. Let your imagination take the lead. Get creative people!
When creativity can direct your hand, the search for meaning just might be obsolete.
Now yes… leaving the search behind is difficult, scary even, of that we can be sure. Maybe the toughest part of adopting this mentality is that you’ll have to take full responsibility for the “who” you create – but how completely fantastic! A richer, more vibrant, more authentic “you”, and considering the most authentic people I know, I can think of nothing better.
